Sharing Encouragement and Constructive Feedback

Last updated on 24 Jun, 2025

Our community thrives on thoughtful engagement, mutual respect, and support. As you comment on others’ posts, here are some guiding principles to help you offer feedback in a way that is both encouraging and helpful.

 💬 When to Share Feedback

  • Positive-only by default: If a post doesn’t specify that the artist is looking for feedback or mention any challenges, it’s best to stick to supportive and encouraging comments only.

  • Constructive feedback welcome: If a post does ask for feedback or mentions areas where they’re struggling, feel free to offer gentle, specific suggestions.

✅ Tips for Giving Thoughtful Feedback

When someone invites feedback, try using the "compliment-suggestion-compliment" approach:

1. Start with something you appreciate

  • What stands out to you? Is there a moment of beautiful observation, a strong gesture, or a sense of care in the execution?

2. Offer a gentle suggestion

  • If they’ve asked for feedback, you might mention:

Composition: Does the arrangement guide your eye well?
Value structure: Are the lights and darks reading clearly?
Form: Is the illusion of depth coming through?
Edges: Are there opportunities to soften or sharpen?
Proportions: Does something feel slightly off, and how might they check it?

  • Use tentative language (e.g., “You might try…” or “One thing you could explore…”), and frame observations as suggestions rather than corrections.

3. End with encouragement

  • Acknowledge their effort and progress. Share your excitement for their next step.

 ❤️ General Guidelines

  • Be respectful: Always assume the best intent. We’re all here to learn.

  • Be specific: General praise is great, but specific observations are even more meaningful.

  • Be kind: Tone matters—aim for warmth and humility.

  • Be concise: Keep feedback focused to avoid overwhelming the artist.

Let your comments reflect the kind of support you would hope to receive. Thank you for helping make this space generous, thoughtful, and welcoming for all!
